It’s that time of year again! Welcoming America Week, a national event to help build unity between immigrants, refugees and long-term residents, is occurring Sept. 12-20, 2020.

Last year a large community celebration was held to recognize and celebrate our community’s diversity. This year, with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve adjusted to a primarily online version for our local celebration of Welcoming Week. Please join us in one or all of the planned activities! Passive activities include community photo submissions to demonstrate our welcoming community and a family story stroll through downtown Issaquah. Or, consider joining us for any of our three live virtual events:

  • Mariachi, Dance & Margaritas Watch Party via Zoom – Sept. 17 @ 7PM

Join us for vibrant music by Mariachi Guadalajara de Seattle, a margarita recipe demonstration, and dance performance with Baile Folklore Colibri.

  • Cultural Panel via Zoom – Sept. 18 @ 12-1:30PM

Explore Issaquah’s past and present through the eyes of people of color and immigrants. Join us as we hear how Issaquah’s history has impacted the present and share ideas for working together as a community to make all feel welcome.

  • Youth Cultural Panel via Zoom – Sept. 19 @ 3-4PM

Hear the experience of local youth who have immigrated to Issaquah – their backgrounds, challenges, and perspectives on what we all can do to be welcoming.

Additional information and meeting links are available at issaquahwa.gov/welcomingweek. A big thank you to our partners – the City of Issaquah, Arts Commission, the Downtown Issaquah Association, the Issaquah Library, the Issaquah Schools Foundation Cultural Bridges Program, the Issaquah Highlands Council and Issaquah History Museums!
